About Me

I'm a 22 year old sports journalist with a passion for telling stories about people, sport and the experiences that shape them.

My work is particularly focused on athletics and women's sport, where I enjoy exploring the lives behind the performances, from elite athletes balancing competing ambitions to the communities and individuals who make sport meaningful.

I am interested in stories that go beyond results and statistics, using interviews and long-form reporting to uncover the human side of competition.

Currently studying journalism at Leeds Beckett University, I am continuing to develop my reporting, working as a sports marketing ambassador at the university interviewing and feature-writing.

Warning: RED-S Doesn't Discriminate

When people hear the term Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), they might imagine elite athletes training at the highest level, pushing their bodies to extremes in pursuit of success. For a long time, I shared that assumption. I believed RED-S was something that happened to professional athletes, not to recreational runners like me. Looking back now, after more than three years of recurring bone stress injuries and time away from the sport I love, I realise just how wrong I was.Finding M...

The Athlete Who Refused To Choose

In a matter of weeks, Lucy will compete at the Commonwealth Games in the heptathlon, one of athletics’ most demanding events. Yet earlier that same day she was not training on the track. She was working in an office block, building towards a qualification in architecture, a profession she cares about just as deeply as her sport. That dual existence sits at the heart of her story.Because while many elite athletes reach major championships by making their sport the center of their universe, Lucy ha...

Who are you, when you are no longer the best?

There are three things an athlete cannot outrun: death, taxes, and injury. For some, injury is a temporary interruption, a few missed races, a cautious return, a season rewritten but still salvageable. For others, it becomes something far more destabilising. A body that no longer behaves the way it once did and potentially a career paused long enough for identity itself to begin slipping out of focus. For Charlie Carvell, that moment arrived just as everything in his life appeared to be accelerati...

Leeds Beckett named loudest team at BUCS outdoors.

This past weekend saw a tremendous turn out for our Leeds Beckett athletics team, who were named one of the loudest supporters of the day by commentator Alex Seftel. Not only this, but the team managed to bring home a bronze medal in the women’s 1500 metres and a silver medal in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, and a nail-biting fourth in both the 4x4 on the men’s and women’s sides.Starting off final day, we saw Josh Blevins and Abdi Darood take on the rest of the country’s top universities over 1...

Leeds Beckett Korfball: The Mixed‑Gender Team Becoming a BUCS Powerhouse | Leeds Beckett University

For students who don’t necessarily see themselves in the more traditional university sports, don’t want the physical contact of rugby, or simply want to try something new, korfball offers an excitingly different experience. It’s strategic, mixed, inclusive, and built around teamwork rather than pure individual success.
“You need to be able to catch and pass a ball… you need to be quite quick and able to change direction,” explained both Sam and Elena.
While these are skills that are required fo...

From After School Hobby to National Champion: Rebecca Young's Karate Journey | Blog | Leeds Beckett University

The pinnacle of her journey so far came at the English Championships. "I remember being stood on the mat, and I remember the flags haven’t even gone yet. And I remember thinking, I know I've won, I know I've won, and I know I've got the title," she recalls. After years of training, financial struggles, and moments of self-doubt, winning the English title represented something deeper than a trophy. "Afterwards, I just remember being just so proud of myself and knowing that I didn't give up," she...

Balancing Books and Bars: Sports Scholars with European aspirations | Leeds Beckett University

Academics are a major piece of the day-to-day puzzle. The team studies subjects ranging from economics and finance to sport science; one gymnast said they’re studying science of sport performance, which “is similar to the interest that I have in sport.” The athletes recognised that, as sports scholars, they had unlimited support: “Gary’s (Beaumont) pretty helpful with communicating, helping to communicate with our lecturers and seminar leaders in case we need a bit more time.”

On the training s...
